AI Prompts for Tailoring Job Applications
Start with Step 1See an example
- Who it is for
- Anyone applying for jobs who wants each application to match the posting more closely, using only their real experience.
- Outcome
- A tailoring outline for one job: the posting's key requirements, honest matches from your background, gaps to address, suggested resume edits and a cover letter outline you write in your own voice.
Step-by-step prompts
How to use it: replace the words in [brackets] with your details, paste Step 1 into your AI tool and answer any questions it asks, then paste the next steps into the same chat. Read and edit the result before you use it.
Step 1
Break down the job posting
Here is a job posting: [PASTE POSTING]. List the top 5–7 requirements in order of how important they seem, separating must-haves from nice-to-haves. Note any keywords or phrases that appear more than once.
Step 2
Match my real experience
Here is my current resume: [PASTE RESUME, with contact details removed]. For each requirement you listed, point to the specific line or experience in my resume that matches it, or say "no clear match". Do not invent experience, titles, dates, tools or results. Only use what is in my resume or what I tell you.
Step 3
Address the gaps honestly
For each requirement with no clear match, ask me one question about whether I have related experience you don't know about. If I don't, suggest an honest way to address the gap (transferable skills, current learning, or simply leaving it out). Never suggest claiming something I haven't done.
Step 4
Suggest resume edits
Suggest up to 6 specific edits to my resume for this job: reordering bullets, rewording existing bullets to use the posting's language where it is accurate, and trimming less relevant items. Show each as "Current" and "Suggested". Keep every number and claim exactly as true as the original.
Step 5
Outline the cover letter
Create a cover letter outline (not a finished letter) with: an opening that names the role and one genuine reason I'm interested, two short paragraphs each tied to a top requirement and a real example from my background, and a brief close. Give bullet points I can write from in my own voice.
Example of good output
Illustrative example, not a real candidate:
| Requirement | Match from resume | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Customer support experience | "Handled inbound support tickets at a retail company" | Match |
| Scheduling software | No clear match | Ask candidate |
| Team training | "Onboarded new seasonal staff" | Partial match |
Suggested edit: Current: "Helped new hires." Suggested: "Onboarded new seasonal staff on store procedures."
Tips and pitfalls
- Never fabricate. Don't add degrees, titles, tools, dates or results you don't have. A tailored resume should be more relevant, not less true.
- Remove contact details first. Leave your phone number, address and email out of the chat.
- Mirror language only when it's accurate. Using the posting's terms helps only if they describe what you actually did.
- Write the final letter yourself. The outline gives structure; your own wording sounds like you and holds up in interviews.
- Keep a copy per job. Save each tailored version so you remember what you sent.
FAQ
Can the AI write my whole cover letter?
It can, but these prompts stop at an outline on purpose so the final letter is accurate and in your voice.
What if I'm missing a must-have requirement?
Address it honestly or decide whether the role is a fit. Don't stretch your experience to cover it.
Will tailoring guarantee an interview?
No. It helps your application show its relevance clearly; hiring decisions depend on many other factors.
