Marketplace Seller
AI Prompts for Marketplace Listings and Buyer Replies
Start with Step 1See an example
- Who it is for
- People who sell used or handmade items on online marketplaces, from a few decluttered things to a steady side business, and want clearer listings and calmer, faster replies to buyers.
- Outcome
- An honest listing draft built only from the details you give, plus a small set of reply drafts for common buyer questions, offers and pickup arrangements that you review before sending.
Step-by-step prompts
How to use it: replace the words in [brackets] with your details, paste Step 1 into your AI tool and answer any questions it asks, then paste the next steps into the same chat. Read and edit the result before you use it.
Step 1
Gather the item facts
I'm selling an item on an online marketplace. Ask me, one short list at a time, for the facts a buyer would need: what it is, brand and model if known, size or dimensions, condition and any flaws, what's included, my asking price, and pickup or shipping options. Don't write the listing yet. Don't fill in anything I haven't told you.
Step 2
Draft the listing
Using only the facts I gave you, write a marketplace listing with: - A title under 80 characters that leads with what the item is - A short description (3–5 sentences) in plain, friendly language - A bullet list of condition notes, including every flaw I mentioned - What's included and pickup/shipping terms Don't add features, measurements or claims I didn't give you. If something important is missing, list it as a question at the end instead of guessing.
Step 3
Check it for honesty and clarity
Review the listing as a cautious buyer would. Point out anything that is vague, could be read as overpromising, or hides a flaw. Suggest specific edits. Then give me the revised listing.
Step 4
Prepare replies to common buyer messages
Draft short, polite replies I can adapt for these situations: 1. "Is this still available?" 2. A question about condition or measurements (use only facts from my listing) 3. A lowball offer — my lowest acceptable price is [PRICE] 4. A buyer who wants to hold the item without committing 5. Confirming a pickup time in a public place Keep each reply under 3 sentences. Don't promise anything my listing doesn't say.
Step 5
Handle a tricky message
Here is a buyer message I'm unsure about: [PASTE MESSAGE]. Tell me in plain terms what the buyer seems to want and whether anything looks like a common marketplace scam pattern (for example, asking to pay outside the platform or sending a "verification code"). Then draft a calm reply that keeps me within the marketplace's normal process.
Example of good output
Illustrative example, not real data:
Title: Wooden 4-drawer dresser, solid pine, minor top scratches
Description: Solid pine dresser with four full-width drawers that slide smoothly. It's been in a spare room and is sturdy with no wobble. There are light scratches on the top, shown in the photos. Pickup only.
- Condition: good; light scratches on top surface, one drawer knob slightly loose
- Included: dresser only
- Pickup: weekday evenings, buyer brings help to lift
Reply to "Is this still available?": "Hi, yes, it's still available. Would you like to set up a time to see it?"
Tips and pitfalls
- Only list what you know. If you don't know the model or exact measurements, say so or measure first. The AI should never fill gaps for you.
- Name every flaw. Clear flaw notes cut down on back-and-forth and disputes after the sale.
- Set your floor before you reply. Decide your lowest price before drafting offer replies so you aren't negotiating on the spot.
- Keep safety and payment on the platform. Use the marketplace's own messaging and payment process and meet in public places; treat reply drafts as a starting point, not advice for every situation.
- Don't paste private details. Leave buyers' full names, phone numbers and addresses out of the chat.
FAQ
Can the AI tell me what price to ask?
It can help you think through condition and what's included, but it can't see current local prices. Check recently sold listings for similar items yourself.
Will these prompts work for any marketplace?
Yes. They produce plain text you paste into whichever platform you use. Check that platform's own listing rules and character limits.
Should I send the reply drafts as written?
Read and adjust each one first. You know the item and the buyer conversation; the drafts are only a starting point.
