ChatGPT Prompts for Marketing Ad Copy
Also searched as: ChatGPT prompts for marketing ad copy
- Who it is for
- Marketers who need ad headlines and body copy for search, social, or display and are tired of staring at a blank brief.
- Outcome
- A set of on-brief headlines and ad variations, checked against character limits, ready for you to pick from and A/B test.
Step-by-step prompts
Paste each step into the same chat so the model keeps the earlier context. Then edit before you send.
Step 1
Load the brief
You are a direct-response copywriter. I'm going to give you a brief. Don't write anything yet. Ask me up to 5 questions if anything important is missing. Product/offer: [product or offer] Audience: [who they are, what they care about] Main benefit: [the one thing they get] Proof points: [facts, features, guarantees you can actually claim] Channel: [Google Search / Meta / LinkedIn / display] Brand voice: [e.g. friendly, plain, no hype] Words or claims to avoid: [list]
Step 2
Generate headlines by angle
Write 15 headlines, 3 for each of these angles: benefit, problem/pain, curiosity, social proof (only use the proof I gave you), and urgency (no fake deadlines). Keep each under [character limit, e.g. 30] characters. Show the character count next to each.
Step 3
Write body copy
Take the top 5 headlines by clarity. For each, write ad body copy under [character limit, e.g. 90] characters with one clear call to action: [CTA, e.g. "Start free trial"]. Show character counts.
Step 4
Build A/B pairs
Pick 3 pairs of ads that differ in only one thing (angle, CTA, or opening word) so I can A/B test them cleanly. For each pair, say what's being tested and what result would tell me.
Step 5
Self-check
Review all copy above. Flag anything that makes a claim not in my proof points, uses words from my avoid list, goes over the character limit, or sounds generic. Rewrite the flagged lines.
Example of good output
EXAMPLE ONLY. Fictional product, not real results. Brief: a meal-kit service for busy parents, 20-minute recipes.
| Angle | Headline | Chars |
|---|---|---|
| Benefit | Dinner Done in 20 Minutes | 25 |
| Problem | No More 6pm Dinner Panic | 24 |
| Curiosity | The Weeknight Dinner Shortcut | 29 |
Body (benefit): "Fresh ingredients, simple steps, on the table in 20 minutes. Pick your first box." (82) A/B pair: same body, test "Dinner Done in 20 Minutes" vs "No More 6pm Dinner Panic". This tests benefit vs pain framing.
Tips and pitfalls
- Give it real proof points. If you don't, it will invent vague claims ("trusted by thousands"). Delete anything you can't back up.
- Check character counts yourself. AI counts are often slightly off. Paste the copy into the ad platform's preview before you launch.
- Ask for more than you need. Writing 15 and picking 3 beats asking for 3 perfect ones.
- Test one variable at a time,. or you won't know what made the difference.
- Check platform policies. Some claims (health, finance) have ad rules the AI may not know.
Works with
These prompts are plain text, so they work in ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini. Paste each step into the same chat so the AI keeps the context from earlier steps. Free and paid tiers both work. Paid tiers usually handle longer pasted material better.
FAQ
Can AI write ads that convert?
It can draft good options fast. Whether they convert depends on your offer and audience, so test them.
Should I tell it my competitors?
You can ask for copy that sets you apart. Don't let it make comparison claims you can't support.
Is it okay to paste customer reviews in?
Yes, as proof material. Use only real reviews you have permission to quote.
How do I keep it on-brand?
Paste 2-3 past ads you liked into Step 1 and say "match this voice."
